Department of Sustainability and Environment

The primary objective of this centre is to undertake fundamental and applied research in the broad area of SDIs and land administration. Much of the research undertaken in the centre uses the State of Victoria as a working laboratory to obtain research data, and test solutions and outcomes.

The University of Melbourne also significantly supports the research program of the centre through provision of facilities, support staff and research infrastructure.

Cooperative Research Centre for Spatial Information (crc-si)

The success of this centre played a significant role in the successful application for a Cooperative Research Centre for Spatial Information (CRC-SI) in Australia. The research in the two centres is complementary and strengthens the research programs of both centres. In simple terms the focus of the Centre for Spatial Data Infrastructures and Land Administration is on public good research with a particular focus on activities which are the responsibility of government. The centre has a particular emphasis on linking spatial information technology with legal, social, environmental and economic issues. On the other hand the CRC-SI has a key focus on developing a strong private sector in the spatial information industry and as such will concentrate on all information area which has commercial applications and benefits. These two objectives are complementary.
